You Ain't Seen Nothin' Yet!

You know, as we look around this shell-shocked old world it's kind of easy to become discouraged. We face a barrage of negativity in the media - largely because negativity sells. It somehow awakens something deep within and we tend to feed on it don't we? - generally speaking. Our TV screens transmit images of violence and bloodshed, wars and hatred, it's just a constant onslaught that wearies the soul. And one atrocity seeks to outdo the one before. I mean there was the devastation in Kosovo and just when we thought it couldn't get any worse along comes the U.S. tragedy. It seems the depravity of fallen mankind knows no bounds.

We'll at the risk of sounding pessimistic, let me tell you if you thought the World Trade Centre disaster and the anthrax scare are bad enough (which of course they are), then in the words of the old Bachman Turner Overdrive song, You Ain't Seen Nothin' Yet - Baby, You just Ain't Seen Nothin' Yet. Oh thanks Tony, just what I need to hear! Well, hear me out. There's no point wrapping ourselves up in cotton wool and burying our head in the sand pretending everything's rosy - 'cause it's not! The Good Book says that we are to call things that are not as though they are, not the other way around. It does no-one any good to pretend that John Lennon's silly song "Imagine" is going to be a self fulfilling prophecy.

The Bible clearly describes today's events in graphic detail and it states quite emphatically that things are going to get worse - Much worse! In fact it says in Matthew (24:18) - and these are Jesus' words . . . that "there will be great distress, unequalled from the beginning of the world until now—and never to be equalled again. 22 If those days had not been cut short, no one would survive, but for the sake of the elect those days will be shortened" Think of the worst disaster in human history - this will pale into insignificance compared to what's coming. So we see the world is in for troubling days ahead.

But I want you to notice something here. The Bible speaks of this present day evil as being "Restrained" (2 Thessalonians 2:5). There is coming a time when this restrainer (who I believe is the Holy Spirit - it's not the Church because that's a SHE is Scripture and it's a HE whose doing the restraining) will be taken out of the way and it'll be on for young and old. Can you imagine a world where evil is given unfettered dominion over mankind? Just consider it for a moment. No Holy Spirit, so therefore nothing of what He is. No self control, no love, no kindness, no compassion, no peace, no gentleness, no faith. The world will finally have what it has craved ever since the fall - existence without God, and as a result God is going to have to step in before they annihilate themselves completely.

In the wake of all the evil around you consider this - God is still restraining evil, that means He is still in control. God is still on the throne! The church isn't going to see any of this stuff because God is going to take her off the Earth before it all gets under way, so if you're part of the Church - you're safe. Do you belong to Him this morning? You have no intelligent excuse for not belonging to Him you know. What I have described is most definitely going to happen. Jesus himself said that it MUST happen before He returns and His return is imminent - are you ready for that? Turn to Him today, there's no guarantee there's going to be a tomorrow.
